Girls Swimming Key To Success: Competitiveness

The Thornton Fractional South girls swimming team is looking to be more competitive this new season, and achieve some medals at conference.

Girls Swimming head coach, Bryan Evancho vocalized how the team is looking to have more competitiveness this season.

“I think they just realized how much more they need to work to compete at the higher level they want to," said Evancho. "You know, a lot of girls thought they were going to medal at the conference, and fell a little short. I think that taught them a lesson that you need to be working hard every minute you're in that pool.”

In order to achieve this competitiveness during the season, seniors and other returning swimmers are going to have to step up in their training, and as leaders for the new swimmers.

Evancho alluded to this when he spoke on which returning players he expects to take on leadership roles this season.

“Yeah, we have a wide range of ages and swim levels, so I think Elena McWilliams definitely is a returner," Evancho said. "She was a first-year swimmer last year, but really grew as a team leader. And one of our seniors, our only senior, is Aliyah Harb. She's been on the team for four years, she's pretty much been a leader since she's been a sophomore.”

McWilliams spoke on taking that leadership role and looking to help the people who are coming in and trying to help them learn the ropes.

“I try to talk to them a lot about just going out there and once you start swimming, just keep swimming," said McWilliams. "And the main goal for everybody is just to finish your races. I try to do that with everybody. And even with the new swimmers who are too shy to speak up, I try to get them involved as much as possible since we're all a team.”
