Thornton Fractional South boys track team continues to thrive despite limited facilities, thanks to dedicated coaches and hardworking athletes. Head Coach Steve Nelson, who has coached for over a decade, credits the team’s success to perseverance and adaptability.
“A lot of people are surprised when we perform well because we train in a small space with just a short hallway,” Nelson said. “Other coaches are amazed, but it’s a testament to our kids and our assistant coaches. They make the most of what we have.”
According to athletes on the team, they have found ways to push themselves beyond their limits. Shot put thrower Kevin Rincon emphasized the importance of the weight room in his development. “The weight room showed me results,” Rincon said. “When I see my numbers go up, it’s proof that I’m getting stronger. If I keep blasting the weights, I’m only going to improve.”
For triple jumper David Nkwogu, maintaining a strong mentality is key. “Last year at state, I folded under pressure,” Nkwogu admitted. “This year, I stay in shape and push myself during conditioning. Going hard now will help me in competition.”
Teammate Pierre Dennis, also a triple jumper, finds balance by making music in his free time. “It puts me in a state of freedom,” Dennis said. “During the season, I listen to Coach, keep a good mindset, and have fun with my teammates.”
