The Thornton Fractional South Red Wolves baseball team is preparing for a competitive season under the guidance of head coach Amir Wright. Wright emphasizes effort, consistency, and mental toughness as key components of the team’s strategy.
“I try to lead by example every day as a coach,” Wright said. “Come in with a positive mindset, come in with good energy every single day for them.” According to Wright, he instills a sense of competition among his players, encouraging them to approach practice with the same intensity as a game. “Every day should be competitive,” he said. “If you want to win a job, if you want to play more, this is your chance. Every time you go out there to practice, it’s like a game—just so the games feel easier.”
Players echo their coach’s emphasis on mental toughness and perseverance. David Harvin Jr., one of the players, believes that persistence is key to success. “The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from baseball is to never give up,” he said. “Consistency is key. If you do the same thing over and over again, it becomes second nature.”
Center fielder Kyle Smith views baseball as an ongoing learning process. “There’s always more to learn,” Smith said. “The game is constantly changing, and playing at the varsity level is a completely different challenge. You never stop growing as a player and a person.”
First baseman Ryan Marnell has learned resilience from the game. “Failure is important,” Marnell said. “It’s about learning how to handle it and come back stronger. Ever since I embraced that mindset, I’ve gained confidence and learned that I just need to outwork everyone.” With a focus on hard work and self-improvement, the Red Wolves are determined to make their mark this season.
