Thornton Fractional South’s varsity boys track and field team demonstrated their capability to compete among Illinois’ elite by participating in the IHSA Class 3A Sectional Championship at Lockport Township on May 21. The team brought determination, growth, and a state qualifier to the event.
According to recent results, the RedWolves had entered the sectionals with confidence after securing a dominant first-place finish at the South Suburban Blue Conference meet with 164 points. Despite competing against strong programs like Homewood-Flossmoor and Lincoln-Way East, Thornton Fractional South finished 13th in one of the state’s most competitive sectionals.
“We’re confident right now. This is one of the toughest sectionals in Illinois,” said Head Coach Steve Nelson. “Our kids — mostly sophomores and freshmen — showed they belong here.” Senior David Nkwogu qualified for state in the triple jump with a leap of 13.59 meters.
“I knew I was going to qualify. I’m ready for the big stage in Charleston,” Nkwogu said. Sophomore Pierre Dennis also performed well, achieving a 6.66-meter long jump to earn fifth place after just two weeks of preparation.
Despite some events not going as planned, Thornton Fractional South displayed determination and ambition. With a young and motivated core, they are not only building for future success but also laying the groundwork for potential greatness.
