Thornton Fractional South senior Shakira Reed reflects on her journey into dance and the team’s potential during a season of growth.
“I started dancing because I loved K-pop,” Reed said. “They’re very big into dance culture,” said Reed, Senior Dancer. “I thought I wasn’t going to make it,” she said. “But I did, and I’m really happy I tried. I didn’t dance because I’m coming off surgery,” Reed said. “But I’m very proud of the girls. This team has a lot of potential,” she said. “We always have room to grow, and that’s exciting.”
According to Reed, she discovered her passion for dance through music and culture, finding inspiration before ever stepping onto a competitive floor. Despite her interest, she admitted she was nervous when she first tried out for the team.
Since joining the program, Reed has gained a deeper appreciation for the discipline and demands of competitive dance, calling the experience a major learning opportunity. This season, her role shifted as she worked her way back from surgery, limiting her ability to perform.
Reed specifically praised the leadership of the co-captains and the contributions of the incoming freshmen, noting the team’s strong foundation.
