Thornton Fractional United’s boys’ volleyball team participated in the HF Tournament over the weekend, concluding with a 3-4 overall record. The team displayed significant potential early in the season.
The team commenced the two-day tournament on Friday with a challenging match against Richards. After losing the first set 25-22, TF United responded by winning the second set 25-19 before narrowly losing the third set 18-16. Despite this loss, the team’s determination remained intact as they faced host Homewood-Flossmoor in their second match of the day, ultimately losing in two sets.
According to reports from Saturday’s matches, TF United regrouped and secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Romeoville. They edged out the Spartans with scores of 27-25 and 25-23, showcasing resilience and focus. This win earned them second place in the Red Pool and a position in the tournament’s championship bracket.
The match against Romeoville highlighted standout serving runs and scrappy defense from TF United, with players demonstrating tenacity by preventing the ball from hitting the floor during a back-and-forth contest. Their performance during crucial points of both sets underscored their mental toughness and ability to perform under pressure.
In the crossover round, TF United faced top-seeded Reavis but fell in straight sets, 25-10 and 25-16. Despite showing moments of aggressive net play and defensive effort, they were unable to secure a win. The final match against Lemont saw TF United battling through two tight sets before losing 25-21 and 25-19.
While TF United concluded the tournament with a 3-4 record, they demonstrated growth and competitiveness against strong opponents. With solid performances from various contributors and signs of improvement throughout each match, TF United is building a foundation for a promising season.
