Seniors Makyra Petty and Jayla Hines reflect on their journeys, early competitions, and areas of growth for the TF South dance team.
“I thought it was pretty cool,” Petty said. “I didn’t think I was going to make it, so I cried. One of the girls told me to just stay, so I kept coming back,” said Petty, Senior Dancer. “It was a lot,” Petty said. “It was tough trying to calm people down while staying focused, but we did pretty good. I made the team, so I was excited,”
Thornton Fractional South seniors Makyra Petty and Jayla Hines have each taken different paths into dance, but both have embraced the challenges and growth that come with competitive performance.
According to Petty, the team’s first competition on December 7 brought a mix of emotions. She said her main areas of improvement are timing and energy, noting the physical demands of competition.
Hines joined the team after attending the final tryout and earned a spot immediately. She described competition as stressful but rewarding, with multiple performances and new routines to manage. Hines said she is focused on improving facial expressions and pacing her energy through the middle and end of routines as the season continues.
