The Thornton Fractional South Red Wolves girls wrestling team demonstrated significant determination but narrowly lost to the Proviso East Wildcats, 21-18, in a closely contested dual meet on January 15 in Maywood.
According to the match details, despite a series of forfeits, the Red Wolves fought hard, showcasing their potential and skill. The meet began with Thornton Fractional South conceding points due to forfeits at 100, 105, and 125 pounds, giving the Wildcats an early advantage. However, the Red Wolves did not let that deter them.
At 110 pounds, Dakodia Kelly gave one of the most exciting performances of the night by battling Proviso East’s Regina Jones in a thrilling match. Despite falling 13-12 in a razor-thin decision, Kelly showed tremendous heart and skill, keeping the match close until the very end.
The Red Wolves quickly regained their footing with Shaniya Tharp-Thomas earning a forfeit victory at 115 pounds. Thornton also benefited from double forfeits at 120, 130, and 145 pounds, which kept them within striking distance of the Wildcats.
The biggest moment of the night came at 155 pounds when Jermia Moore delivered a dominant pin over Proviso East’s Madilyn Hunt in just 1:21. Moore’s impressive victory added crucial points to the Red Wolves’ total and highlighted the team’s ability to compete at a high level.
While the Wildcats’ depth and the forfeits ultimately proved to be decisive factors, Thornton Fractional South’s performance was noteworthy. The final score of 21-18 does not reflect how competitive the Red Wolves were; with a full roster, they are expected to be a formidable force moving forward.
